Important Information regarding BBQs and Fire Pits

The Board has received questions regarding the presence of BBQs and fire pits in the community.  Following is important information pertaining to BBQs and fire pits.

There is an International Fire Code that the State of Idaho and the City of Coeur d' Alene follow that prohibits the use of portable fire pits within 15 feet of a structure or combustible materials.  The Code is #307.4.3 and can be found on the State of Idaho Dept. of Insurance website under Idaho State Fire Marshall.

So, to answer the question, "No", portable fire pits are not allowed on any deck, patio, or balcony.  Our limited common areas are not big enough to allow them.

The question regarding BBQs seems a logical follow up question.  There is a code that says BBQs/grills cannot be within 10 feet of a structure or combustible materials --- but there is an exception to this Code.  If the area where the BBQ/grill is placed has a sprinkler system in place, this 10-foot restriction does not apply.  This Code is #308.1.4.  Since our limited common areas do have a sprinkler system, we can have BBQs/grills.

The information can be found at Idaho Fire Code Chapter 3 - General Requirements
